Same for the piano player, when his fingers get callused and strong. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. I got to the top of this hill, and I was in trouble. Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. And I only wish to protect it, because it means something to them, like it means something to me. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. She was dying during the writing and recording of that record, and in the middle of doing vocals, she died. You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. Then I'll jump in and push him a little bit into other areas. And I just love to see them love it so much. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. I think anything beyond a 5 or 6-minute solo is a waste of time. After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. He's been with me since about 1976, so he's really got it down. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. We dont get along, but I love his playing. Of course we were friends. Now, I was grateful for everything that had happened. And we wrote the record. I didnt jump into that. Wow. It was a lift for me, that I emotionally needed. Did that tension persist throughout your tenure with the band? I was confounded by that. When I met you guys in Vegas, you referred to Steve as He Who Cannot Be Named. Is there some legal issue here? It was through the Beatles that they started moving records across the ocean faster . asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.
